The three levels of chimney inspection
Level 1 is the annual visual inspection of the readily accessible parts of your chimney, and it is usually included with a sweep. Level 2 adds a video camera scan of the flue interior plus the attic, crawlspace, and roof areas. NFPA 211 calls for Level 2 when a property is sold, after a chimney fire or other event, or when you change fuel type or appliances.
Level 3 is rare. It involves removing parts of the structure to reach concealed areas, and it’s only needed when a serious hidden hazard is suspected.
When to schedule an inspection
- Every year, before you use the fireplace or stove
- You are buying or selling a home (Level 2 is standard)
- After a chimney fire, lightning strike, earthquake, or major storm
- You are switching fuel or installing a new insert, stove, or furnace
- You notice cracks, leaks, odors, or draft problems
What a quality inspection includes
- Exterior masonry, crown, cap, and flashing check
- Firebox, damper, smoke chamber, and flue liner evaluation
- Video scan of the flue for Level 2 inspections
- A written report with photos
- Prioritized recommendations: urgent, soon, and optional
